“BJSS has given me great support and trust as an Enterprise Architect, allowing me to develop our Architecture service and take the lead on pre-sales and client projects.”
One of our Enterprise Architects, Ross Duncan, tells us how he got into the industry, what a typical project looks like for him and how he sees his career progressing at BJSS.
I’ve always been in IT. After graduating, I started as a Software Developer, working mainly on business apps for Financial Services organisations and the Government. After a spell of 10 years or so, I moved away from the code into analysis are design roles. From there, it was a short hop into Enterprise Architecture.
What does a typical project look like as an enterprise architect?
It’s cliché to say, but there is no typical project really. My most recent project was with a provider of National Transport Infrastructure, who wanted BJSS to develop an architecture for a new cloud-based data platform. The most satisfying part of the project was delivering not only the technology architecture but also a cost model and operating model around the new platform.
No matter what project you are on though, as the heart of BJSS is Software Engineering, Enterprise Architecture roles are never abstract or disconnected from delivery projects. The work is always relevant and valued by both the client and other architects, who are closer to the software, and it’s a very collaborative approach.
How do you see your career progressing at BJSS?
BJSS has given me great support and trust as an Enterprise Architect, allowing me to develop our Architecture service and take the lead on pre-sales and client projects. Training is there if I want it, and my managers and peers are always around, ready to bounce ideas off or discuss problems.
As for what comes next, it’s an exciting time to be part of the Consulting Team at BJSS. I’m really interested in the Technology Advisory services we’re providing, particularly Adaptive Strategy and Agile Transformations, so I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge and expertise in these areas. Overall, I’m confident that BJSS will help me develop as a Consultant, whatever path I want to take.
